Hiring a non-family MD was a major step forward. But keeping them was becoming difficult.
After months of careful discussion, the family appointed a well-liked, experienced candidate. Three months later, momentum had stalled. Decisions were being revisited. Family members remained deeply involved in day-to-day operations. The MD felt uncertain about their authority, and the wider team had started to notice.
TWYD was asked to help.
Through structured interviews with the MD, family directors, and senior leaders, it became clear that the issue wasn’t capability. It was lack of clarity.
We supported the board in defining decision rights and practical boundaries. We also coached both parties: helping the MD build credibility and helping the family build confidence in stepping back, without stepping away.
Expectations were reset. Relationships improved. The MD stayed, and so did the progress.
“We were in danger of losing a great hire. TWYD helped us understand our part in that and guided us to a much healthier working relationship.”
